In other words, the failure of Islamists in not ipso facto the failure of their religion: A fair number of other factors have also had a role. Yet it would not be fair to explain the failure of Islamism in Turkey in terms of Islam alone. Naturally, the Islamist failure provoked a debate on Islam, Islamic movements, and anything related to Islam. In less than two decades, Islamism transformed Turkey into an authoritarian regime with a host of structural problems ranging across the economy and foreign policy. However, Islamization in Turkey has brought the country to the brink of a multifaceted catastrophe. A Turkish slogan “Islam gelecek, dertler bitecek” (Islam is the solution for all problems) summarizes that mindset. For the millions who supported it, Islamization was a stanḋ alone magic cure. People sincerely believe that Islamization will solve Turkey’s problems. Millions of Turks have made sacrifices in different ways to contribute to the Islamization of Turkey, but all efforts were affiliated with making Turkey a better country with Islam.

Simply, its pledge was to bring Turkey back to the “Golden Age of Muslims,” which is believed to have happened somewhere in history. The Islamic cause had seen big promises in Turkey: economic prosperity, high standards of law, and a decent status in global politics.
